Fab from way Back: Braids, Braids, Braids

Braids have always been a part of our African culture. Think of it, there is probably no way where you can come from a trip to the Motherland without having done the good corn rolls or the twisted braids that have a length to your behind. That’s when everyone who has not seen you in a while can see that you are back from the Motherland. A trending topic is that the braids are back to the mainstream! It has been a while since the video I got five on it by Luniz was produced, which had them dancers wearing the long braids or the Salt n Pepa videos from the 90’s. Plus it has been a while since we have seen Brandy with them tiny braids. When we see it now in the popular videos, it’s back in the mainstream. Now it has.

The public personalities who have been bringing braids back are: Solange Knowles, Brandy, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Chrisette Michele. Not to forget the African young ladies in the Diaspora who are wearing their braids in a big bad bun. Bad is meant in a good way, of course. Let’s not forget Kim Kardashion who also made an attempt to wear braids. We chose to let that picture out, since the look did not really work for her. Bad move K’K.

We advice you to try it to wear the braids. Wearing braids might be like taking a dive into the 90’s for some, but we encourage you to take a chance. Firstly, braids are very good for making your hair grow when it is done well.  Below are pictures of trendy ways to wear your braids. Not all braids styles are back in fashion. Also, below is a top 3 hair treatments for your braids. Thanks to our readers and Afro Grow Hair Long for the tips and Tops.

If you have a good tip for how to treat those braids, do not hesitate to send in your tip and a picture to abinamagazine@gmail.com

Tips to treating braids

  1. Use 100% fiber Kanekalon hair to braid your hair. Human hair is also a good option.
  2. Make sure you deep condition your hair every 2 to 3 weeks.
  3. Use hair oil daily. A mistake we Africans do a lot is using too greased products to feed our scalp. This leaves the hair sticky and very easy to smell. A better solution is to use conditioning oil for your scalp. One of our readers recommended Argain Oil.
